Half a Degree

Just a few islands she said

We are just loosing a few islands

The earth will heat up they said,

By just 1.5 or 2 degrees

Half a degree

That doesn’t seem like much

On a warm summer day

Who will notice that?

And yet

It could make 70% of this planet

Turn into a monster

A monster that swallows homes

That swallows lives

That swallows islands

Half a degree

That doesn’t seem like much

On a cold winters day

Who will notice that

And yet

It could make the mother below our feet

Become infertile

An infertile earth that makes people starve

That makes people suffer

That makes people die

Half a degree

That doesn’t seem like much

They said

Sitting in their air conditioned cars

And yet

It causes so much suffering

To people just like us

That walk the same ground we do

That breathe the same air we do

That drink the same water we do

And yet

We shut the blinds

And keep on poisoning this world

But this world is the only one we have

No matter if we’re black or white

No matter if we’re male or female

No matter if we’re rich or poor

Half a degree

That doesn’t seem like much they said

We will loose islands she said

How can we agree

When we keep on

Shutting the blinds and don’t listen

How can we agree

When a celebrities personal issue is more talked about

Than this issue concering us, all of us

How can we agree

When we don’t talk

If not everyone is talking

We will loose islands she said

But nobody heard her

And her home and family were gone

Don’t let this happen

Spread her message

Keep talking

Let’s not make it half a degree more

Because you know what half a degree could mean

For you, for them, for us

Love,
melisande
